July's same store sales numbers are in:
Total Retail was down 5.1 percent (this is lower than year-to-date of 4.6 percent down)
Costco reported July same store sales were off 17 percent
J.C. Penny reported a decrease of 12.3 percent
Abercrombie & Fitch is down 28 percent
Saks is down 16.3 percent
American Apparel is down 13 percent.
Interesting though, sales are up in stores that sell less expensive goods:
Ross Stores up 4 percent
T.J. Max up 4 percent
Kohl’s expected a 3.2 percent decrease, but had a 0.4 percent increase!
The fight for the customers' attention is a never-ending battle -- we live in challenging times.
