Blockbuster Corporation is seeing comp-store sales increases for the first time in years, so the company is testing different cosmetic improvements at several stores in Dallas, and could move forward with a larger rollout.
"For a small investment there are great improvements," said Jim Keyes, chairman and CEO. “While it’s still early, we’re pleased with the results. ”
For a small investment there are great improvements. Mr. Keyes is absolutely right. We have not seen the Dallas Blockbuster stores but we know what small investments and small improvements can do for your store.
Generally, store planners recommend a complete remodel of your store about every five years. But you should definitely make changes in-between any major remodeling. Five years is far too long to leave your store looking essentially the same, but we see it happen all the time. When did you last shake up your sales floor?
Your Speed Bumps (the first fixtures customers see inside the front door) should be changed at least once a week. The Power Wall at the front right of the store needs to be remerchandised at least once every season, more if you sell fashion goods. Change your end Features, the displays behind the cashwrap, and your window displays at least once a month. Rotate your model boards as often as you can. Customers will think you have a bigger assortment than you actually do, plus mixing things up will do wonders for your staff. Be prepared to hear, "When did we get this?!" Oh, about two months ago ...
And if you're not in the market for a complete remodeling you can always refresh your sales floor. Get out your camera and take lots of photos -- the camera will pick up things that the naked eye misses. Change what needs changing. Paint the entire store (including the class room and rest rooms -- all customer areas). Remerchandise the sales floor -- make it, and the merchandise, look new again.
