Monte Carlo Resort & Casino

We have been crazy busy the past two weeks. January is a favorite trade show and convention month. Monday morning we leave for Surfaces Expo in Las Vegas. We're supposed to be staying at the Monte Carlo, our favorite Las Vegas property. We have a history here -- the Monte Carlo has been the site of many a business meeting and family reunion over the years.

In case you haven't heard, the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino had a fire yesterday. According to reports, most of the damage was to the exterior of the building. Every one got out safely and there were just a few minor injuries. All guests were evacuated to other MGM Mirage properties.

We found out during a keynote presentation. We were talking about Sensory Merchandising and George was describing the unique scent that is pumped through the Monte Carlo Casino. She said she doesn't know the name of the fragrance, but she really likes it. An attendee near the front of the room said, "Right now it's called 'Flame'."

We had no idea what he was talking about -- did he have an inside track? So we probably looked like deer caught in headlights until several other people yelled, "It's on fire!" Then an attendee handed George his BlackBerry so she could watch what was happening as it happened. Wonderful thing, technology.

So, we're patiently waiting for the convention housing bureau to let us know where to go on Monday afternoon. And we're glad that everyone is well and that the Monte Carlo we know and love will re-open for business sometime soon.

Anton Nikodemus, CEO of the Monte Carlo, posted a personal note on the Monte Carlo website for all employees, thanking them for their "professionalism and dedication that resulted in an efficient and orderly evacuation of all Monte Carlo employees and guests and for that, I can’t thank you enough."

Mr. Nikodemus went on to assure the staff that they will receive pay, health and welfare benefits, plus toke and tip replacement for 30 days or the re-opening of the hotel. In addition, all hiring of new MGM Mirage employees has been placed on hold so, if needed, Monte Carlo employees will get priority consideration for available jobs. They will also retail their seniority rights.

These are the kind of things that create superior customer care. When you take care of your team, they will take care of you.
