An article in the September 11, 2007 issue of the Wall Street Journal caught our eye. Cellfire is a free, new service that allows you to sign up to receive coupons via your cellphone. And retailers, such as Virgin Megastores say Cellfire is generating good results.
Cellfire is a strictly opt-in service -- consumers register at the Cellfire website or by texting a message from their cellphone. Over 200 marketers have signed up to send consumers coupons.
Shoppers save simply by showing the cashier the coupon displayed on their cellphone screen. Eventually, coupons will be e-mails directly from the cellphone to the cash register!
According to Dee McLaughlin, vice president of marketing at Virgin Entertainment Group, Virgin Megastores "has offered discounts on products such as DVDs" She also reports "redemption rates at seven stores in New York and California at 15 percent, far higher than the typical return for paper coupons." Virgin is also using Cellfire to promote in-store events.
Cellfire says that "about one million people have signed up" for its service to date. Check it out here: http://www.cellfire.com
